How to Conserve Water in the Warmer Months

Water is a precious resource which we all rely on to live – that’s why it is imperative that we do our upmost to preserve it. You may or may not live in a region that suffers with drought, though either way your actions will have an effect on the wellbeing of our planet. Therefore, in this post, we advise on steps that can be taken to reduce water wastage.

Be Mindful with Taps

Whenever you turn your taps on, think about why you are using them, how powerfully you are using them and if they really need to be on for the duration of the task you are completing. So much water is wasted whilst we brush our teeth and wash our hands, be sure to only run your taps to the speed necessary and turn them off in between rinses. When doing the dishes by hand, always fill a bowl rather than running the tap constantly, and be strategic with the order of washing – cleaning glasses and cups first before moving onto dirtier plates and pans.

Use a GRP Water Storage Tank

By using a GRP water storage tank, this will not only allow you to conserve water and eliminate wastage, but the materials that tank is made of will resist corrosion for a much longer period of time. The glass re-enforced plastic is lightweight and inexpensive, but incredibly strong. It’s properties help to manage temperature fluctuations within the tank as conditions change, minimising the risk of bacteria growth.

Be Considerate with your Appliance Usage

It is so important that we use our appliances sustainably, not only does practising this help to conserve water, it also saves power and electricity. When using a dishwasher, ensure it is fully loaded with before turning it on, rather than doing multiple small washes. You should also try to scrape dishes as well as possible, firstly to maintain function in your dish washer, but also to eliminate the need to leave the dish in for the next wash. If washing clothes, of course separate colours as you should, but try to fill that machine up! A standard washing machine can use 105 litres of water per wash, so it really is essential that we wash our clothes efficiently.

Think About your Shower

Minimise the amount of time you take to shower by setting yourself a time limit. You could do this by playing a couple of songs and aiming to be finished before the end. For a more efficient shower you could begin with shampoo, then condition and while this does its thing, apply your shower gel, then rinse both together. Use any facewashes at the sink, so that you’re not wasting any water whilst it activates on your skin. Showers can also be made more environmentally-friendly by switching to an energy efficient shower head. Standard shower heads can use up to 15 litres of water per minute, whereas these new alternatives offer a flow rate of 7. This can be an affordable but highly effective way of essentially halving the water used in your shower.
